Women’s Health Initiative

Our Goal: The Women’s Health Initiative aims to improve the health, safety and well-being of lesbian, bisexual, gender-nonconforming individuals with in the greater San Diego area. Some of the areas we will be focusing on are:

Cancer Screening (Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Screenings)

  • Why? Lesbians are less likely to get preventative services for cancer
  • Lesbian and bisexual, gender non-conforming individuals have high rates of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use.

Nutrition and Activity

  • Why? Lesbians and Bisexual females are more likely to be overweight or obese

Aging Well

Our Goal: The Aging Well initiative aims to improve the health, safety and well-being of elderly LGBT Individual individuals with in the greater San Diego area. Some of the areas we will be focusing on are:

Access to culturally competent healthcare

  • Why? The aging LGBT population faces additional barriers to health because of isolation and a lack of social services and culturally competent providers

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Our Goal: The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Initiative aims to improve the health, safety and well-being of lesbian, bisexual, gender-nonconforming individuals with in the greater San Diego area. Some of the areas we will be focusing on are:

Suicide Prevention

  • Why? LGBT youth are 2 to 3 times more likely to attempt suicide

Housing

  • LGBT youth are more likely to be homeless

Smoking Cessation

  • LGBT populations have the highest rates of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use

Trans Task Force

Our Goal: The Trans Task Force Initiative aims to improve the health, safety and well-being of lesbian, bisexual, gender-nonconforming individuals with in the greater San Diego area. Some of the areas we will be focusing on are:

  • Trans individuals have a high prevalence of HIV/STDs, victimization, mental health issues, and suicide and are less likely to have health insurance than heterosexual or LGB individuals
